Our Methodology

The Helios Alliance has developed a groundbreaking simulation platform that uniquely integrates System Dynamics modeling with AI analytics to be used in opioid abatement planning. The Opioid Abatement Model is a simplified version of the real world that can evaluate various policies, judge their likely success or failure, and provide a clear idea of what will be necessary to abate the opioid epidemic.

Helios will model potential evidence-based policy interventions along the continuum of care, from prevention to treatment to sustained recovery, which will allow leaders to make the most informed choices for their communities, depending on available resources. The broader simulation platform will allow stakeholders to make key decisions on policy making, resource allocation, and intervention strategies.

What differentiates the Helios approach is the degree of policy analysis we can provide our clients; because of the nature of a system dynamics model, our team can do more than just report on outcomes as they happen – we can predict the likely success or failure of programs before they begin to spend money. Additionally, we can provide the same level of analytic rigor to assessing the impact of existing programs, as well as identifying gaps in their existing programming that may be affecting their results.

We go beyond reporting on results to predict them.

Our simulation platform provides a transparent means to explore likely outcomes of policy and program implementation, as well as predict system successes and the potential unintended consequences of policy shifts.

System Dynamics is an ideal methodology to address the dynamic complexity that characterizes many public health issues as these models can adequately assess multiple interacting diseases and risks, the interaction of delivery systems and diseased populations, and matters of national and state policy. It has been used extensively in this space since the 1970s, considering questions of population health including infectious disease policy, chronic disease policy, local-level health agency planning, and health system reform, and substance abuse. Beyond public health applications, System Dynamics has been used by entities as varied as The World Bank, MasterCard, Litton Industries, and General Motors.

There is no other available means to analyze proposed policy pre-implementation and pre-funding. Insights gained from a System Dynamics-powered computer simulation platform will make a difference between abatement success and failure.
